Prime Minister Announces Appointment of Sergio Marchi as Ambassador to the World Trade Organization

August 3, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointment of the Honourable Sergio Marchi as Permanent Representative and Ambassador of Canada to the Office of the United Nations and to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva.

"Sergio Marchi has been an outstanding member of our Cabinet team," said the Prime Minister. "And his Cabinet experience has amply prepared him to be a most effective advocate for Canada's interests at the WTO. While I will miss his presence in our Caucus, I am pleased that he will continue to serve the people of Canada in his new capacity. Aline joins me in wishing him and Laureen all the best as they embrace this exciting new opportunity."

Mr. Marchi was first elected to the House of Commons in 1984. He was sworn to the Privy Council on November 4, 1993, and has been minister in three cabinet portfolios: Citizenship and Immigration, the Environment and, most recently, International Trade.

Mr. Marchi will not be drawing his parliamentary pension.
