Statement by the Prime Minister

August 17, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today expressed his sorrow at the news of the terrible earthquake that struck Turkey:

"Such destruction and devastation is impossible to truly comprehend. The thoughts of all Canadians are with the people of Turkey as they struggle to deal with this terrible disaster. And our heartfelt prayers go out to the families whose loved ones have been so suddenly and tragically taken from them.

Canada is in contact with the Turkish government to see how we can best assist. We will also contribute through international relief agencies, such as the Red Cross and Red Crescent , as they make their appeals. Our Charge d'Affaires is en route to Istanbul to assess the situation first hand and assist us in planning further assistance."
