 Summit of the Americas 2001

Statement by the Prime Minister

August 17, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today expressed his sadness at the news of the death of Hédard Robichaud:

"I was very sad to learn that Hédard Robichaud had passed away. He was a man of immense ability who served the people of New Brunswick and all Canadians with distinction and dedication. I was proud to know him and considered it a privilege to work alongside him in Ottawa.

I am especially sad that his passing comes so close to the beginning of the Moncton Summit of La Francophonie. I know he would have delighted in seeing this display of the vibrancy of Francophone culture in New Brunswick and Canada. And I will be thinking of him as the Summit unfolds.

Aline joins me in extending our deepest sympathies to his family and many, many friends.
