August 26, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced that the President of France, Jacques Chirac, will make a working visit to Ottawa, September 1, 1999.

President Chirac and the Prime Minister will review many current international issues, including the situation in the Balkans, the conflict in the Great Lakes region of Africa, and the prospects for peace in the Middle East. They will also touch on the excellent state of bilateral relations between our two nations.

On September 2, President Chirac will travel to Quebec City, where he will speak to the Conference of l'Association internationale des maires et responsables des capitales et métropoles partiellement ou entièrement francophones (AIMF). He will also meet with Premier Bouchard. That evening he will travel to Moncton, where, from September 3-6, he will take part in the Summit of la Francophonie. During the Summit, in the company of Governor General Romeo LeBlanc, he will meet with representatives of the Acadian community, the first French settlers to arrive in Canada in 1604.

On September 6, he will travel with the Prime Minister to make the first official visit by a foreign head of state to the territory of Nunavut. He will depart from Canada the next day.
