Prime Minister announces appointment to the Senate and New Leader of the Government in the Senate

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced that His Excellency the Governor General has agreed to summon J. Bernard Boudreau of Nova Scotia to the Senate. Mr. Boudreau has also been appointed Leader of the Government in the Senate, in which role he will oversee the Government's legislative agenda in the Senate. The appointment is effective immediately.

The Prime Minister took the opportunity to thank the Honourable Alasdair Graham for serving effectively as Leader of the Government in the Senate since June 1997.

THE HONOURABLE J. BERNARD BOUDREAU

A native of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Mr. Boudreau is a former Cabinet Minister in the Nova Scotia Government, and represented the provincial riding of Cape Breton The Lakes in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1988 until September 1997.

During his tenure in the Nova Scotia Government from 1993 until 1997, Mr. Boudreau held a number of posts, including Minister of Health and Minister of Finance. He also served as Chair of the Priorities and Planning Committee of Cabinet.

From 1988 to 1992, as a Member of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly, Mr. Boudreau chaired the Public Accounts Committee, and was Opposition Critic for Finance and Economic Development.

Mr. Boudreau is a lawyer, with a degree from Dalhousie Law School and a Bachelor of Arts (cum laude) from St. Francis Xavier University. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1985. Most recently, Mr. Boudreau served as Counsel to the law firm of McInnes, Cooper and Robertson.

Mr. Boudreau has also been active in other pursuits, having served as President of the Cape Breton Barristers Society, Commodore of the Royal Cape Breton Yacht Club, President of the Riverview Minor Basketball Association, and President of the Nova Scotia Liberal Association.

Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia in 1944, Mr. Boudreau and his wife Jean have three children - Corinne, Brian and Douglas.
