Statement by the Prime Minister

October 31, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today expressed his shock and sadness on the news of the crash of EgyptAir flight 990:

"The government and people of Canada offer our deepest condolences to the families and friends of all who have died in this sudden and terrible tragedy. And we keep a special place in our prayers for the loved ones of the Canadians who have been lost.

Aline joins me in the hope that those who are grieving will find the support and comfort they need in the difficult days ahead."

The government of Canada is in touch with EgyptAir to determine the exact number and identities of the Canadians who were on board. Those seeking news of family or friends who may have been on Flight 990 can call the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade at this toll free number: 1-800-387-3124.
