Statement by the Prime Minister

October 31, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today expressed his sadness on the news of the death of Canadian diplomat Anthony Vincent:

"I was, indeed, saddened to learn of the passing of Anthony Vincent. He served Canada with great skill and dedication in numerous overseas postings. But Canadians will remember him best for the courage and perseverance he displayed during the hostage taking at the Japanese Ambassador's residence in Lima, Peru. He was a most able public servant who earned the abiding respect of his colleagues. He will be sorely missed.

Aline joins me in offering our sincerest condolences to his wife, Lucie, and his daughter, Alexandra."
