Statement by the Prime Minister

November 1, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today expressed his deep sadness at the news of the confirmation of the death of the Associate Editor of La Presse Claude Masson and his wife Jeannine Bourdages in the crash of EgyptAir Flight 990:

"Claude Masson was among the finest journalists in Canada. Throughout a remarkable career, he was notable for his fundamental humanity. He was always sensitive to the need to report the news fairly and objectively, while, at all times, respecting the dignity of those he covered. This deeply held ethic, as well as his active involvement in the community, earned him not only the respect but also the affection of all those who met him. His untimely passing is an enormous loss for his profession and for our society.

Aline joins me in offering our sincerest condolences to the families of Claude Masson and his wife, their children, Bruno and Philippe, as well as all their colleagues and friends."
