Statement by the Prime Minister

November 6, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today expresses his sadness on the news that Laurence Decore had passed away:

"The people of Alberta have lost an extraordinarily gifted leader. I first met Laurence Decore in the summer of 1967, and over the years I came to know him as a man of vision and perseverance. He served with distinction as Mayor of Edmonton and than Leader of the Alberta Liberal Party, where he made history by leading the Party back from the political wilderness to Official Opposition status. He will be greatly missed.

Aline joins me in offering our sincerest condolences to his family and friends. It is our fondest hope that, even as they grieve, they will be able to take some small comfort from the knowledge that his struggle has come to an end."
