Statement by the Prime Minister

December 31, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today issued the following statement upon learning of Russian President Boris Yeltsin's decision to step down:

"I believe that the determination and vision Boris Yeltsin demonstrated in transforming Russia and establishing its place among the ranks of democratic nations will inspire the next generation of Russian leaders. Russia's real progress in economic and political reform and the establishment of democratic institutions of government are a distinguished legacy to Mr. Yeltsin's work and career as President.

"On behalf of the Canadian people, I extend sincere wishes for a happy and restful retirement."

In a letter to the acting President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Chrétien renewed Canada's strong support for Russia's continued efforts at economic and political reform that Mr. Yeltsin had so steadfastly championed.
