Statement by the Prime Minister

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today expressed his deep sadness at the news of the death of Father Georges-Henri Lévesque:
"Education and social development were always at the heart of the work of Father Georges-Henri Lévesque; work that inspired whole generations to succeed by surpassing themselves.
Over the past 50 years, Father Lévesque contributed enormously to the cultural and social life of our country. He will, of course, be remembered as the founder of the Faculty of Social Sciences at l'Université Laval, and also as one of the leading thinkers behind the Quiet Revolution and one of the most influential members of the Royal Comission on Arts, Letters and Sciences in Canada; where his work led to the creation of the Canada Council. Later, he met the enormous challenge of founding the University of Rwanda and made important contributions to raising Canada's international academic profile.
The extraordinary talent and vast intelligence of Father Georges-Henri Lévesque transcended borders and languages, and his influence will endure strongly for generations to come.
On behalf of all Canadians, I pay tribute to Father Georges-Henri Lévesque and express my sincerest condolences to his loved ones and many friends."
