Statement by the Prime Minister

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today expressed his deep sadness at the news of the death of novelist Anne
Hébert:
"Throughout an almost 60-year career, Anne Hébert took her place among the most prominent figures in modern literature. The singular beauty of her novels and poetry inspired millions of people in Canada and throughout the world.
Anne Hébert's work reflected not only a prodigious talent but also a deep compassion and humanity. It was these extraordinary qualities that touched the hearts of each of her readers, and elevated her work to the very summit of literature, as shown by the many awards she earned over the years. Her loss, so soon after being honoured for her most recent novel as well the body of her work, is a great one for Canada.
On behalf of all Canadians, Aline and I pay tribute to Anne Hébert and express our sincerest condolences to her family and many friends. We hope that they can take some small comfort from the knowledge that the magnificent work of this great writer will remain as a beacon of literary brilliance."
