 Summit of the Americas 2001

Statement by the Prime Minister

January 31, 2000
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today expressed his deep sadness at the news of the Kenya Airways jet crash just off Ivory Coast:

"At times like these, the world is starkly reminded of the fragility of life, and of the inadequacy of mere words to do justice to the magnitude of the loss and the suffering that at this difficult hour is being experienced by families and loved ones.

As they grope for meaning and understanding, it is our hope that they can take some small comfort from the knowledge that they are in the thoughts and prayers of Canadians and people all over the world.

Aline joins me in expressing our relief at the news that some of the passengers have survived and our deepest condolences to those who are grieving."
