 Summit of the Americas 2001

Statement by the Prime Minister

April 10, 2000
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today welcomed the announcement of a summit to be held June 12-14, between President Kim Dae-jung of the Republic of Korea and Kim Jong Il, leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

"Dialogue offers the best chance for reconciliation and peaceful coexistence on the Korean peninsula," said the Prime Minister. "This summit offers an historic opportunity for the two Korean states to work together to resolve their long-standing differences, in the interests of peace and security in the region and in the wider international community."

The Prime Minister noted that Canadian officials, in a meeting in Ottawa last month, encouraged officials of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, or North Korea, to respond positively to overtures from the Republic of Korea, or South Korea to resume their bilateral dialogue.
