STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

Ottawa, Ontario
August 21, 2000

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today expressed his deep sadness at the news that there were no survivors aboard the Russian submarine Kursk:

"Like people the world over, the hopes and prayers of Canadians have been with the crew of the Kursk and their families as the rescue effort unfolded. And we are deeply saddened at the news that none of the crew is left alive.

It can only be of the smallest comfort to those whose families have been shattered by the irreplaceable loss of fathers, sons and brothers, but we hope that the awareness that we share their terrible grief, and that they will remain in our thoughts in the difficult days ahead will be of some sustenance.

Aline joins me in extending our most heartfelt condolences to the families, and all the people of Russia, on this awful tragedy."
