 Summit of the Americas 2001

Statement by the Prime Minister

March 16, 2000
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today expressed his shock and profound sadness at the news of the accident in St-Jean-Baptiste-de-Nicolet, Quebec, that has taken the lives of 7 children:

"We can only imagine the grief that the parents of these young innocents are feeling at this terrible hour. The loss of a loved one is always an ordeal. But to have a little son or daughter taken so suddenly is painful beyond measure. While it can be only the smallest consolation, they are in the hearts and thoughts of all Canadians. It is our most profound hope that they can gain some strength and peace from the love and comfort of family, friends and neighbours.

Aline joins me in extending our deepest sympathies to the families of those who have died; and in offering a special prayer that those who have been injured will enjoy a full and complete recovery."
