PRIME MINISTER OF SWEDEN TO VISIT CANADA

February 6, 2003
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced that Prime Minister of Sweden Göran Persson will visit Canada on February 10 and 11, 2003.

"Sweden is one of Canada’s most valued international partners. As like-minded countries, we cooperate closely on a range of multilateral issues, ranging from international peace and security to sustainable development," said Prime Minister Chrétien. "Sweden is also an important source of foreign investment, creating thousands of highly skilled jobs in Canada. We welcome this opportunity to further enhance our excellent bilateral and commercial relations."

In their meeting on February 10, the two leaders are expected to discuss current world issues, bilateral trade and investment and Canada-Europe relations. While in Ottawa, Prime Minister Persson will also meet with Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, Governor General of Canada, and will attend a roundtable meeting on innovation with Canadian and Swedish business leaders.

In Toronto on February 11, Prime Minister Persson will attend the Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers hockey game and participate in the ceremonial dropping of the puck.

This will be Prime Minister Persson's first official visit to Canada and the first official visit by a Swedish Prime Minister since 1991.
