Prime Minister Jean Chrétien issued this statement on the news of the death
of Canadian novelist, Timothy Findley:
"I was deeply saddened to learn that Timothy Findley, one of
Canada's most talented and beloved authors, is no longer with us. A man of
great literary skill, his many valued contributions to Canadian literature
and theatre have left an indelible mark on Canada's artistic and cultural
landscape.
Twice honoured by the Governor General of Canada for his work, and an
Officer of the Order of Canada, Timothy Findley's novels garnered both
critical and public acclaim, with their rich characters and complex themes.
His gift as a writer was equally distinguished in the many plays, scripts
and short stories that he wrote for radio, film, television, and theatre –
which he held in special regard. A charter member of the Stratford
Shakespearean Festival, his extensive support of the theatre, and the City
of Stratford itself, was renowned.
Aline joins me in extending our sincerest condolences to Timothy
Findley's family and his many, many friends. I hope that they can find some
solace in the knowledge that his writings – loved and appreciated by
generations of Canadians – will continue to earn the respect and
admiration of future readers, both in Canada and around the world."
