Statement by the Prime Minister

April 6, 2000
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien has expressed his deep sadness at the news of the death of the first President of the Republic of Tunisia, Habib Bourguiba:

“Habib Bourguiba was a man of vision and change who laid the foundations of modern Tunisia. His influence extended far beyond the borders of his country and his accomplishments bear eloquent testimony to his efforts.

Mr. Bourguiba was a hero to his people. News of his death brings sadness to all of Tunisia’s friends. On behalf of all Canadians, Aline and I extend our deepest and sincerest condolences to his family and the people of Tunisia.”
