PRIME MINISTER ANNOUNCES VISIT OF INDONESIAN PRESIDENT ABDURRAHMAN WAHID

September 28, 2000
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced that Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid will pay a working visit to Canada October 1 to 3. This will be the President’s first visit to Canada.

"I look forward to meeting President Wahid," said the Prime Minister. "He is the first democratically-elected leader of Indonesia and took over the reins of government at a very difficult time in his country’s history. During this visit, we will discuss ways in which Canada can continue to assist the people of Indonesia in meeting the considerable challenges of promoting democratic values, social diversity and reconciliation."

During his visit, President Wahid will meet with Prime Minister Chrétien and Governor General Adrienne Clarkson. On October 3, the President will pay a brief visit to Montreal, where he will address students and faculty at McGill University.
