By getting actively involved, volunteers are helping to keep our communities strong and ensure the quality of life we enjoy as Canadians.

I am pleased to honour the men, women and young people who contribute to their communities, thereby enriching Canada, in this very personal way.

This year’s theme, "Volunteering - a time-honoured tradition", celebrates the significant role volunteers have played in shaping our past, and recognizes the need for their continued support to help guide our future. And I look forward to 2001, when volunteers will be recognized throughout the year during the United Nations International Year of Volunteers."
