PRIME MINISTER ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF
CHIEF GOVERNMENT WHIP, DEPUTY WHIP

Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announced today the appointment of Marlene Catterall, M.P. (Ottawa West-Nepean) as Chief Government Whip, and Jacques Saada, M.P. (Brossard--La Prairie) as Deputy Government Whip.

Ms. Catterall was first elected to the House of Commons in 1988. She was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the President of the Treasury Board in December 1993, and as Deputy Government Whip in September 1994.

Mr. Saada was first elected to the House of Commons in 1997. He was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Solicitor General in July 1998.
