Appointment to the Canadian Human Rights Commission

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointment of Michelle Falardeau-Ramsay as Chief Commissioner of the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

"I'm very pleased that such an experienced and well-qualified person has agreed to head the Commission," said the Prime Minister. "She is the first woman ever to hold this important position."

Michelle Falardeau-Ramsay has served as Deputy Chief Commissioner of the Canadian Human Rights Commission since 1988. She was formerly a lawyer in private practice, specializing in labour relations. From 1975 to 1982, she was Deputy Chairman of the Public Service Staff Relations Board. From 1982 to 1988, she was Chairman of the Immigration Appeal Board.

The appointment is effective January 1, 1997.
