Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointment of Michelle Falardeau-Ramsay as Chief Commissioner of the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

"I'm very pleased that such an experienced and well-qualified person has agreed to head the Commission," said the Prime Minister. "She is the first woman ever to hold this important position."

Michelle Falardeau-Ramsay has served as Deputy Chief Commissioner of the Canadian Human Rights Commission since 1988. She was formerly a lawyer in private practice, specializing in labour relations. The appointment is effective January 1, 1997.
