The Governor General Canada’s Head of State is the Queen, represented by the Governor General. The Governor General is appointed by the Queen on the advice of Canada’s Prime Minister. The Governor General’s main role is to represent the Crown in Canada. In addition to granting Royal Assent to all bills passed by the House of Commons and the Senate, the Governor General reads the Speech from the Throne which opens Parliament and, on the advice of the Prime Minister, dissolves Parliament before elections.
