Canada’s Head of State is the Queen, represented by the Governor
General. The Governor General is appointed by the Queen on the advice of Canada’s

Commons and the Senate, the Governor General reads the Speech from
the Throne which opens Parliament and, on the advice of the Prime
Minister, dissolves Parliament before elections.
The Governor General also:

- represents Canada in foreign countries and receives foreign leaders
visiting Canada
- visits hospitals and schools, participates in community events and
festivals and promotes a sense of belonging and pride among Canadians
- presents honours, such as the Order of Canada, to citizens who,
