Importing Fireworks

The Government of Canada is committed to protecting the safety and security of Canadians. The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is responsible for preventing the importation of prohibited items, and ensuring all restricted items are imported only when the requirements as set out by Canadian legislation are met.

At ports of entry across Canada, CBSA border services officers assist other government departments in controlling the importation of certain goods into Canada, including fireworks.

The CBSA sees an influx in travellers seeking to import fireworks on long weekends, beginning in late May through July, and again in the fall, as Halloween approaches.

Requirements for importing fireworks

The CBSA reminds all travellers that an import permit issued by Natural Resources Canada is required to import fireworks into Canada. Fireworks that do not have the necessary permit will be refused entry into Canada.
