Marksmanship & Judgment Training Simulator

The CBSA currently uses Professional Range Instruction Simulator (PRISim) Suite® simulators during firearms training for existing workforce as well as new recruits as an introduction to scenario-based training. PRISim is a tool that allows the CBSA to train officers to retain control of a situation and ensure public safety in a controlled, virtual and realistic environment.

This allows participants to practise the judgment component involved in the use of force. Participants complete a minimum of two scenarios where they are placed in a realistic situation and must determine the actions/responses to take. Following the simulator scenario, they must articulate their actions. The response options include verbal communication, the use of OC, baton and the firearm. This helps prepare officers for the "live" scenario-based training portion of the course.

PRISim Suite® simulators provide realistic use-of-force training that develops the skills required for officers armed with both lethal and non-lethal defensive equipment. Flexible deployment options allow training to be delivered at fixed facilities or at any off-site location.

The PRISim Suite® platform features exceptionally realistic video and CGI environments for all aspects of firearms handling including marksmanship, tactical strategies, observation skills, scene assessments, interactive dialog, problem solving and decision-making.

PRISim Suite® delivers all the hard realities of a real operational encounter. It places participants into an interactive environment where they must overcome potentially deadly mistakes, indecision, sudden fear, partial understanding, blind-side surprise, physical/psychological responses and life or death decisions.

It provides an environment for effective training and practice of high stress, high liability incidents that can be more costly or difficult to recreate by conventional methods. A specific scenario may include various possible responses from the subject and the officer. The system allows the instructor to choose a particular branch of a scenario based on the participant's performance at the beginning of the scenario. For example, a participant is using good verbal communication and the instructor selects the branch with the subject obeying all instructions.

The system is pre-installed with an extensive library of training content. These professionally produced content sets include multiple scenario outcomes relevant to:

  • Patrol
  • Tactical
  • Corrections
  • Airport
  • School
  • Military
  • Drug Enforcement
  • Security
  • Active Shooter

The library also includes CBSA-specific scenarios. The Agency has internal resources that can film and edit scenarios for the PRISim system.
PRISim Suite® simulators have delivered training environments to thousands of law enforcement, military, and public safety personnel.

Marksmanship Trainer

The system also includes a basic to advanced marksmanship, skill building and weapons qualification training software. It includes pre-built environments and custom courses, in both indoor and outdoor ranges, as well as the ability to create and edit your own courses.

Independently scored lanes across single or multiple screens allow for simultaneous marksmanship training. The software simulates wind conditions that would affect the flight trajectory of projectiles.

It reduces the need for a conventional shooting range. Pre-qualifications and practice can be simulated, bringing trainees up to speed prior to final qualification, saving range time and money, while reducing safety hazards.

A core content package of marksmanship courses is included with every PRISim Suite® Marksmanship Trainer. The CBSA's Course of Fire is part of this package.
The CBSA is participating in a Public Safety Portfolio collaboration that includes research into the use of simulators for firearm training.

ShootBack® Cannon

The patented Integrated ShootBack Cannon seamlessly integrates "hostile gun fire" from the on-screen threat. The ShootBack is synchronized with Judgment Trainer situations to auto-track and fire a .68 caliber nylon ball from the cannon mounted above the screen. When the suspect on the screen fires, the ShootBack® Cannon fires an accurate single, three-round burst or fully automatic "hostile fire" at the trainee. It's proven to be one of the most immediate and effective training tools. The ShootBack joystick is also included to allow direct instructor control over the cannon. This tool can be used to reinforce the use of cover.

Recoil Systems

The 9mm RecoilRound Aircartridge provides realistic cycle of operation and recoil of semi- and fully automatic firearms. The RecoilRound is a patented high-tech training alternative to pyrotechnic ammunition, using compressed air at 2900 - 3500 psi as its propellant. With the RecoilRound system the chamber is shortened so a conventional, lethal round cannot be fully chambered.

Key Features:

  • The RecoilRound is the most realistic way to simulate firearm recoil and cycle of operation during simulation
  • Firearm ejects the simulated round to provide increased realism
  • Basic hands-on training in safe weapon handling
  • Requires changing of magazine after existing rounds are spent
  • Realistic and cost-effective
  • Sight disruption comparable to live fire
  • Aircartridge technology is clean and reliable
