CBSA seizes 8,250 kg of contraband tobacco at the Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle port of entry

Montréal, Quebec, February 7, 2013 — The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today that its officers seized 8,250 kg of loose tobacco with an estimated street value of over $1 million at the Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle port of entry.

On January 31, 2013, CBSA officers intercepted the contraband tobacco while examining a refrigerated semi-trailer truck. The driver had declared that his truck contained fruits and vegetables. However, upon further examination, CBSA officers found the loose tobacco in 66 boxes hidden behind the shipment of fruit and vegetable crates.

"Seizures like these are a clear sign that our efforts to prevent crime and keep illegal contraband off of our streets are working," said Benoit Chiquette, CBSA Regional Director General for Quebec. "I applaud the CBSA officers involved in this significant contraband tobacco seizure."

The Customs Act stipulates that all goods entering Canada must be declared to the CBSA. Smuggling, untrue statements and other customs violations may lead to administrative sanctions and prosecution in a court of law, for both truck drivers and transport companies.
 
The CBSA's investigation continues.

In 2012, border services officers in Canada made more than 2,300 tobacco seizures worth over $3 million.
