CBSA seizes 6,514 kg of contraband tobacco at Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle border crossing

Montréal, Quebec, May 23, 2013 — The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today that its officers seized 6,514 kg of contraband tobacco, with an estimated street value of over $500,000, at the Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle border crossing.

On May 15, 2013, CBSA officers intercepted contraband tobacco while searching a truck. The driver had declared that the truck contained 26 large cardboard boxes of used clothing. Following further examination of the vehicle, CBSA officers found loose tobacco hidden under piles of used clothing.

The CBSA's investigation continues.

"This seizure is a prime example of how the CBSA is working to keep contraband tobacco off of our streets," said Benoit Chiquette, Regional Director General, Quebec Region. "The proceeds of illegal tobacco sales fuel organized crime and undermine the safety of our communities. The CBSA continues to demonstrate its important role in the safety and security of Canadians."

The Customs Act stipulates that all goods entering Canada must be declared to CBSA officers. Smuggling, false statements and other customs violations may lead to administrative penalties and prosecution in a court of law, for both truck drivers and transport companies.

In 2012, border services officers across Canada made tobacco seizures with a total value of over $3 million.
