CBSA intercepts over 23 kilograms of suspected heroin at the Toronto Pearson International Airport

Mississauga, Ontario, May 6, 2013 – The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today two significant seizures of suspected heroin at the Toronto Pearson International Airport.

The first seizure was made at Terminal 3 on April 21, 2013, while border services officers monitored the baggage offload of a flight from Pakistan. Based on a number of indicators, a backpack was selected for further examination. When the backpack was opened, officers found several taped packages of suspected heroin inside. As a result, officers seized approximately 13.2 kilograms of suspected heroin.

Border services officers made the second seizure on April 28, 2013, while again monitoring the offload of a flight from Pakistan at Terminal 3. Officers intercepted an unclaimed gym bag, opened it and found several taped packages of suspected heroin. Officers seized approximately 10.2 kilograms.

The suspected narcotics were turned over to the Peel Regional Police for further investigation.

During the first four months of 2013, CBSA officers in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) Region have seized over 127 kilograms of suspected heroin.

"Significant seizures like these at the Toronto Pearson International Airport demonstrate that the Agency's efforts to prevent crime in our communities are working," said Goran Vragovic, Regional Director General of the CBSA in the GTA Region. "Our officers are trained to identify inconsistencies and these interceptions were the result of vigilance on the part of our CBSA officers."
