CBSA intercepts over 22 kilograms of suspected heroin at the Toronto Pearson International Airport

Mississauga, Ontario, May 27, 2013 – The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today the significant seizure of more than 22 kilograms of suspected heroin at the Toronto Pearson International Airport.

The seizure was made at Terminal Three on May 19 while border services officers monitored the baggage offload of a flight from Pakistan. Based on indicators, a single duffle bag that was lacking a luggage tag was selected for further examination. When the duffle bag was opened, officers found multiple rectangular-shaped packets wrapped in a floral pattern fabric. X-ray imagery then indicated possible organic matter concealed inside the packets, and subsequent narcotics testing proved positive for suspected heroin. As a result, officers seized over 22 kilograms of suspected heroin.

During the first four months of 2013, CBSA officers in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) Region have seized over 127 kilograms of suspected heroin.

"CBSA officers in the GTA are relentless in their efforts to intercept narcotics from being smuggled into Canada," said Goran Vragovic, Regional Director General of the CBSA in the GTA Region. "I want to send a message to those who seek to use Canada's borders for illegal activity: we will continue to be vigilant in preserving the integrity of our borders and ensuring the safety of our communities."
