Bluetongue is a viral disease of domestic and wild ruminants that can be transmitted by insects, particularly biting midges of the Culicoides species. The range of animals that can be infected with bluetongue virus (BTV) includes most ruminants, but the severity of disease varies among different species.

In Canada, bluetongue is a reportable disease under the Health of Animals Act, and all cases must be reported to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). This excludes bluetongue types 2,10,11,13 and 17, which are listed as immediately notifiable in Canada.
