Isabelle inc. fined $14,000 for Violating the Canada Agricultural Products Act and the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Regulations

December 11, 2009, Montreal, Quebec - On September 21, 2009, at the Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu courthouse, Isabelle inc., located in Saint-Michel-de-Napierville, entered a guilty plea and was convicted on seven counts of violating the Canada Agricultural Products Act and the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Regulations.

The Court of Quebec ordered the company to pay a fine of $2,000 per count for a total of $14,000.

The offences, which were committed between November 14, 2005 and February 2, 2006, involved interprovincial shipments of potatoes in packages that failed to meet the packaging requirements of the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Regulations, thereby contravening the Canada Agricultural Products Act.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is responsible for enforcing a variety of federal legislation, including the Canada Agricultural Products Act and its regulations. The Canada Agricultural Products Act regulates, among other things, the marketing of agricultural products in import, export and interprovincial trade.
