North Kee Trading Company Pleads Guilty to Violating One Count of the Meat Inspection Act

CALGARY, June 9, 2011: On February 17, 2011, in Alberta Provincial Court, North Kee Trading Company pled guilty to violating one count of the Meat Inspection Act.

The Honourable Judge Barley imposed a fine of $10,000, payable by August 31, 2011, against the company.

A Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) investigation determined that North Kee Trading Company had sold and transported meat from its Ontario establishment, which had not been federally inspected, to two market outlets in Calgary, Alberta. The illegal sale of the meat products occurred between October 9, 2008 and January 28, 2009. This action violated section 8 of the Meat Inspection Act.

The CFIA enforces federal legislation including the Meat Inspection Act and its Regulations. The CFIA safeguards food, animals and plants, which enhances the health and well-being of Canada's people, environment and economy, and access to international markets.
