Heartland Colony Pleads Guilty to One Count of Violating the Food and Drugs Act

Brandon, Manitoba, July 5, 2011: On January 31, 2011, in Manitoba Provincial Court, Heartland Colony Farms Ltd. pled guilty to violating one (1) count of Section 4(1)(d) of the Food and Drugs Act.

A Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) investigation determined that the company was unlawfully advertising or selling, or having in their possession for any such purposes, a meat product, namely frozen turkey carcasses that had been sent or conveyed from Alberta to Manitoba, where the meat product did not comply with prescribed standards and was not packaged and labelled in the manner prescribed.

The Honourable Judge Lerner accepted a joint recommendation for a sentence of $10,000 in fines payable within 14 days.

The CFIA enforces federal legislation including the Food and Drugs Act and its Regulations. The CFIA safeguards food, animals and plants which enhances the health and well-being of Canada's people, environment and economy, and access to international markets.
