Canada Transportation Act Review
The Canada Transportation Act calls for a review of itself and of other acts which are responsible for transport and
administered by the Minister of Transport. The review is to be completed by July 2001 and this Web site contains its terms of
reference as well as the relevant section of the Canada Transportation Act and biographies of review panel members. There are
sections set aside for announcements and news releases which currently only contain the announcement of the panel's formation in
July of 2000 and a call for comments from interested parties. The site contains contact information and there are provisions for
search and help functions, neither of which were working at time of site review.

Canada's National Aviation Museum
Canada's National Aviation Museum in Ottawa offers a selection of visitor information on its Web site. This includes location
with map, prices, exhibits, membership, volunteering, the gift shop and renting facilities. The collections are highlighted with a
database which lists aircraft by name, period of use or function and is also searchable. Each craft is described by a page which
gives a brief history, description, pictures, details of the Museum's specimen and technical specifications. These pages are linked
to a glossary for definitions of terms used. The Research notes section contains only one very brief reference and there are three
photo essays - on the R- 100 airship, Igor Sikorsky and camouflage, the later without pictures at present. A Research Toolkit
contains the opportunity to ask an expert about Canadian aviation, information about the Museum's library and bibliographies on the
Avro Arrow, Canadian Civil Aviation History, Children's Books and Women In Aviation. For children there are activities relating to
paper aeroplanes, vocabulary list and several interesting aviation links. Information on Museum programs for school groups and a
"walking tour" of the collections are provided. Ordering details for the cd-rom "Flypast" and a connection to Discovery Channel's
"Flightdeck" Web site are also available, but the search function is not working at this time.

Canadian Air Transport Security Authority
The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority is a crown corporation, created April 2002 as part of the air transport security
initiatives contained in the December 2001 budget. The agency is responsible for screening of passengers and baggage, explosives
detection equipment, federal contributions for civil aviation security and, with the RCMP, providing police on aircraft. The CATSA
mandate, governance, organization and board of directors are explained on this site, with reference to relevant documents and
legislation. Air travellers are offered tips in the form of a brochure, list of items prohibited in carry-on luggage and reference
to other Web sites. A database of CATSA airports can be searched by name or browsed by province and has maps illustrating the
location of the airports as well as mail and Web addresses and contact names. News releases from CATSA and from the Department of

Canadian Coast Guard (CCG)
This site lists and describes Coast Guard services in search and rescue, marine communications and traffic, icebreaking. Within
each service description is a selection of explanatory documents, guidelines, manuals and other information. This includes details
of water levels in shipping channels, Notices to Mariners, boating safety course directory, SAR Seamanship Reference Manual, Radio
Aids to Marine Navigation (RAMN), Marine Spills Contingency Plan National Contingency Chapter and many other useful documents for
mariners of all types. Many sections also include lists of useful links. There are descriptions of the vessels in the Coast Guard
fleet and schedules of fees for various marine services. An illustrated "History of the Canadian Coast Guard Usque Ad Mare" is
available in full and there is information on the regulatory reform process under the Canada Shipping Act. The Act itself and
current regulations are linked from the Consolidated Statutes and Regulations site. Two separate sites describe the Canadian Coast
Guard Auxiliary and the Canadian Coast Guard College and there are also separate sites for Coast Guard operations in each region -
Newfoundland, Maritimes, Quebec, Central and Arctic, and Pacific. Issues of the newsletter "Echo" back to 1996 are found in the

Canadian Transportation Agency
The Canadian Transportation Agency site is divided into four transportation areas - accessibility, air, rail and marine. Within
each area is an explanation of the CTA's responsibilities plus documents, regulations, codes of practice, and information on filing
a complaint or using mediation. For example, in the Accessible Transportation section there are reports and surveys on accessible
transportation in Canada, the newsletter "Moving Ahead", a guide to filing a complaint about accessibility; the Air section has a
list of arbitrators, summaries of enforcement actions, sample tariff documents and information on international agreements; Rail has
information on grain transportation and discontinuance of rail lines; and Marine has the Canadian Merchant Fleet List and
consultations on coasting trade. These are just some of the many items available. In a more general publications section are Agency
annual reports, estimates and Air Travel Complaint reports. Canadian Transportation Agency decisions and orders are available from
1988 to date and interlocutory decisions from 1999. Statutes and regulations and complaint procedures are found on the central page
as well as on the individual areas of the site. CTA member biographies, mission statement, role, structure and decision making
process are also given and there are news releases, speeches and a directory of media contacts by subject. New additions to the site

Civil Aviation
Transport Canada's Civil Aviation program's activities and responsibilities are described by full text documents, manuals,
legislation, statistics, pamphlets, newsletters, reports and other information which cover the many aspects of civil aviation in
Canada. Among these are environmental perspectives (bird and wildlife hazards, noise, land use); equipment and certification for
aircraft, operators and airports; training and education programs; international agreements and technical arrangements; standards
for maintenance and manufacturing; and the Safety of Air Taxi Operations (SATOPS) Task Force as well as other safety issues. Many
databases are available, for company information on air operators, Airworthiness Directives, approved organizations for maintenance,
manufacturing and distribution, the Civil Aircraft Register, Master Minium Equipment List (MMEL), Civil Aviation Terminology System
(CATS), civil aviation medical examiners, and type certificates for aeronautics equipment. A database of Civil Aviation Publications
to order online as well as a connection to United States Federal Aviation Administration are also provided. The Aeronautics Act,
Canadian Aviation Regulations, and CARs Standards, Advisories and Amendments are available for searching in total and by section as
well as linked to relevant areas throughout the site. This very large and complex site is made accessible by a topical index that is
also searchable. A "How do I" section links common inquiries on civil aviation to relevant sections within the site. Connections are

Civil Aviation Tribunal
The Civil Aviation Tribunal, established on the recommendation of the Dubin Inquiry into Air Safety, holds review and appeal
hearings on enforcement and licensing decisions of the Ministry of Transport. The Web site is constructed in one long page, with
links to facilitate navigation. The Tribunal is described by its mandate, objectives, structure and principles. The text of its
rules and a Guide to Tribunal Hearings are also available. There is a partial list of members and staff and a contact address.

Federal Bridge Corporation
The Federal Bridge Corporation is a crown corporation, incorporated September 1998, responsible for non-navigational assets of
the former St. Lawrence Seaway Authority. The Corporation and its subsidiaries, the Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges
Incorporated, the Seaway International Bridge Corporation and the Thousand Island Bridge Authority, are responsible for the
Jacques-Cartier Bridge, the Champlain Bridge, the Seaway International Bridge, a section of the Bonaventure Autoroute, the Mercier
Bridge (Southern Extension) and the Melocheville Tunnel. Corporate information on the site consists of a mission statement, brief
organizational profile and a selection of media releases, annual reports, photographs, contact information and employment
opportunities. A separate site for the Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated contains the history, mission, annual
reports and news releases (through the main site) as well as information on the bridges - construction, maintenance, technical
details, maps and pictures. A Web cam for the Champlain and Cartier bridges is offered but no pictures were available at the time of
review. Another site offers project information on the redecking of the Jacques Cartier Bridge. This includes plans, chronology,
photographs of construction and schedules for bridge and sidewalk closings. Another site covers the Thousand Islands Bridge
Authority in less detail with a few technical and historic facts, a map, tourist and contact information. A link is offered for the
Seaway International Bridge Corporation but it is not operational and a site for an environmental assessment of the Seaway Bridge is

Fraser Port
Fraser Port is on the Pacific Ocean, at the mouth of the Fraser River. The Fraser River Port Authority is a federal agency,
operating under the Canada Marine Act. This site gives sources for the legislation, regulations and letters patent for the authority
and a series of information sheets cover its operation, property and facilities. Some of the same information is repeated in other
sections of the site with descriptions of facilities, fees, "Practices and Procedure" document and source for a "Guide to
Navigation". There is a location map, linked to municipal Web sites along the river and news releases and annual reports from 1998
to date. Other publications available include a land use plan and lease application. Tables give a five-year summary and current
quarter of domestic and international cargo by type and tonnage. There is also information on the environmental management
activities with notices of intent for projects with environmental impact and on the ballast water exchange program. The site has a

Marine Atlantic
Marine Atlantic is a crown corporation, which operates the ferries between the mainland and the Island of Newfoundland. This Web
site offers a brief introduction to the corporation, mission statement, organization chart, short contact list and annual report.
Under the heading "Signal" are a series of short notices, including one on the re-organization of Marine Atlantic and there are also
longer news releases. The company's routes are listed with distances and accompanied by a map. Each ship is described with
photographs and technical specifications. Potential passengers are provided with schedule, rate, waiting list and reservation
information, including an on-line reservation form. Food, accommodation, safety policies and other services are also outlined with
illustrations. There is information for potential suppliers on types of materials purchased, upcoming contracts and a form to
indicate interest. Marine Atlantic's human resources policies are explained with a section for job listings as they become
available. The site is not searchable but options are clearly presented in a selection of large categories displayed on a ship's
wheel.

Ministerial Pilotage Review
On August 25, 1998, the Minister of Transport appointed the Canadian Transportation Agency to conduct a review of outstanding
issues related to pilotage in Canada as stipulated in the Canada Marine Act. The Review, chaired by Marian Robson, presented its
report to the Minister of Transport in August of 1999, following which the separate Web site was discontinued. Information on the
Review, including a backgrounder, terms of reference and the text of the report, "Review of Pilotage Issues: Report to the Minister
of Transport", remains on the Transport Canada Web site.

Moving on Sustainable Transportation (MOST)
This recently introduced Web site describes Transport Canada's Moving on Sustainable Transportation (MOST) program which
provides support to public education, awareness and analysis of sustainable transportation. The site describes the program and
offers descriptions of projects funded in the past two years. Funding guidelines are available as is an application form with
instructions. There is also a selection of general information on sustainable transportation, containing a FAQ, information on
actions which can be taken to reduce transportation related pollution, and an annotated, linked list of tools and resources created
by governments and other organizations which offer tips on energy conservation and alternative transportation programs. An annotated
list of links to additional sites is also provided. This site can be searched as part of the main Transport Canada site, although
the promised site map is not yet available. A "comments" link is available and each page carries an invitation to rate the page.

Nanaimo Port Authority
The Nanaimo Port Authority administers the waters, foreshore and harbour of the Georgia Strait, British Columbia. The site
offers descriptions of shore and marine recreational activities in the area, including a map of the boat basin and of the Canadian
Forces Maritime Experimental and Test Ranges at Nanoose Bay with schedule and location of testing activities. There is also
information on industrial, retail and office space for lease. Terminals at the port are described with rates and tariffs and
photographs. The Port Authority's directors and management personnel are listed and there is one annual report and series of

Pacific Pilotage Authority Canada
The Pacific Pilotage Authority is responsible for pilotage in the coastal waters of British Columbia and the Fraser River. The
PTA annual reports for the past two years are available on this site with the agency's corporate plan and documents describing
procedures, tariffs and berths on the Fraser River. The contact page includes an e-mail directory of staff. There are maps of the
coast, the river, Vancouver Island and Port of Vancouver, as well as of the other ports served. Traffic reports cover the movement
of vessels waiting to be dispatched, just dispatched and report on the position of vessels within the system. The site has a map and

Port Alberni Port Authority
The Port Alberni Port Authority is responsible for the commercial harbour and recreational facilities of Port Alberni, on the
west coast of Vancouver Island. This small Web site gives an overview of the marinas of the "salmon capital of the world". The

Port North Fraser
Port North Fraser, which was founded in 1913, is now governed by the North Fraser Port Authority. The Agency's mission, history
and director and staff profiles are available here, as are a plain text explanation of the Canada Marine Act, annual reports and an
overview of its land use plan. The Port's Practices and Procedures document is found in the section on "Harbour Operations", along
with descriptions of available services, schedule of fees, permit application forms and annual cargo statistics from 1995 to date.
The Fraser River is described and maps show the location of various businesses along the banks and islands of the mouth of the
Fraser. The section reserved for the "Environmental Management Program" is still under development but other sections contain
documents relating to the Harbour's Habitat Conservation Bank for waterfront development and a fibre recovery program. Games and
other activities for children are available through "Admiral Quacker's Page". There is also information on upcoming events,
including the North Fraser Harbour Days festival and the Riverbank Classroom for school groups. Each page of the site contains a

Port of Montreal
The Montreal Port Authority administers the Port of Montreal. Information on the agency includes a description of its formation
and operation, organization chart, directories of board members and authority services, vision and mandate and overview of its
financial operation. Also given is information on its marketing, environmental protection and long-term development strategies and
human resources operation. The Port of Montreal is described in detail, including a history, geographic advantages, operations as
both cargo and cruise port, and intermodal connections. Included in these pages are brief statistics on cargo handled by type and
origin or destination, a list of cruise ships by month and of ships expected or in port for the next three days. There is an
extensive directory of shipping services by type, with addresses and contact information. The "Harbour Masters Office" contains
descriptions of port facilities with specifications, maps and diagrams of terminals and berths, fees and forms for services such as
pilotage, electricity, water and tugs and overviews of port operations in its marine, shore, railway and security divisions. More
detailed maps of the port and its facilities are also available. Public tender notices are posted on the MERX site, linked here, and

The Port of Sept-Îles is located on the Gulf of St. Lawrence, east of Quebec City. General information on this site includes

Port of Vancouver
The Port of Vancouver is operated by the Vancouver Port Authority and this agency's mission, background, board of directors and
annual reports for past years are provided here. There are a series of general information documents on the port's services to
container ships, for bulk or general cargo and as a cruise port. There is additional information on each in another section of the
site, including fees and descriptions of terminals. Port services and connecting transport are outlined with links to business sites
where applicable and there is also information on the unions that supply labour to the port. News releases, speeches and the
newsletter "Port Facts" are available and archived for a few years. There are also guidelines and application forms for the use of
port lands by film productions companies and for community events. Information is also provided on education programs, tours,
speakers available and a schedule of upcoming events. The site gives annual statistics for the past five years on cargo volumes,
ship origins and commodities handled as well as providing more detailed statistical reports for download. Passenger services,

Port Windsor
The Windsor Port Authority replaced the Windsor Harbour Commission in 1999 and administers federal lands within the port under
the Canada Marine Act. The Board's purpose, organization structure and list of board members are available on this site along with
information on the operation of the Port and its facilities. There are brief documents on the capacity of the port, cargo statistics
for the past year, location, markets served and a directory of services. A map of terminal locations is accompanied by information

Québec Port Authority
The Quebec Port Authority operates the Port of Quebec and on this site is its mission, list of directors and history along with
a great deal of information on its operation. Each terminal is described and there are statistics on tonnage handled in total and by
country. A list shows vessels in port and those expected with summary information on each. A fact sheet on the economic impact of
the port is available as is a summary of the advantages of the Port to shipping. There is a list of cruise ships that have called at
the port and maps of its facilities. Events, facilities, fees and location for the Marina for recreational boats are included in a
separate Web site. A large directory lists marine and other services for both commercial shipping and recreational boating. Other
information on the site includes a photo album, quiz, news releases and information on the Seamen's Club, a voluntary service
organization for visiting sailors. There is contact information and a sign-in only site for meteorological details.

Ridley Terminals Inc.
Ridley Terminals Inc., a federal crown corporation, is a bulk cargo marine terminal located on Ridley Island, near Prince
Rupert, British Columbia. This site includes location maps, charter and mission statement and information on the company's health,
safety and environmental policy. The operations of the company are illustrated by captioned pictures of its large machinery. A train
and vessel schedule, news releases and related links are also available as is a staff list with e-mail addresses.

Road Safety
Transport Canada's Road Safety Directorate's mandate is to reduce traffic deaths and injuries, damage to property, the
environment and health, and energy consumption. This site presents the Directorate's mandate, charter and text of the Motor Vehicle
Safety Act. In a combination of short documents, fact sheets, research reports and links to other sites, a wide variety of safety
issues are addressed and explained. Some of these are highlighted in the "Hot Topics" section on the main page, including air bags,
cell phones, drinking and driving, recalls and winter safety, while these and others are accessed from a side bar menu grouped into
categories, such as safety devices, motor carriers and more. In the "Recalls" section there is a database of vehicle recalls by make
and model and another section contains progress reports and other documents on Transport Canada's Road Safety Vision. There is a
section containing regulatory documents with legislation, regulations, policies, test methods and technical standards and another
collection of statistical and research reports, one of which is the annual "Canadian Motor Vehicle Traffic Collision Statistics" for

St. John Port Authority
An annual report, news releases, and issues of the newsletter "Port Progress" describe the St. John Port Authority on this Web
site. Also available are lists - of staff and the board of directors with pictures and contact information - of agents and liner
operations for shipping services, of port tariffs, of projects on the environmental registry and of companies which provide services
for ships, divided by type of service. A section on port facilities is currently empty. Traffic volumes for 1993 to 1998 are given
in a chart and there are notices of tenders for service contracts. Ferry schedules, fares, maps, reservation and general information
are available. Information on cruise ships docking in St. John includes a schedule of arrivals and departures and details of the

Thunder Bay Port Authority
The Port of Thunder Bay is located at one end of the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Seaway and operated by the Thunder Bay Port

cargos handled. There are statistics for the last completed month on cargo by type and origin of the ships and annual cargo and

Transport Canada's Web site covers all aspects of transportation in Canada - air, marine, railroad, and road. There is
background on the department with news releases, frequently asked questions, an illustrated history of the department, mission
statement, business plan and other administrative reports. A full text consolidation of statutes and regulations administered by the
Department also includes text of draft legislation and current bills. There is general information on "La Releve", a series of
initiatives on human resources in the federal government with specific Transport Canada actions under the program. A link to an
Environmental Affairs section contains background on Transport Canada actions on environment issues. Safety sections cover air,
launch (satellites and rockets), road, railroad, marine and transportation of dangerous goods with text of documents, pamphlets,
research and special purpose reports and statistics. Information is given on airport policy, capital assistance program and a
monthly summary of airport divestiture. The sections on aviation, marine, and land transportation include items such as the Civil
Aviation Fact book, Airworthiness directives, the Canadian Civil Aircraft Registry, the marine pilotage authorities, and background
on Canada Shipping Act reform. T-Facts is an electronic library of statistics and forecast data, maps illustrating economic, social

The Transportation Development Centre is Transport Canada's research organization and the material on this site covers all modes
of transportation plus issues in transportation of dangerous goods, accessibility, human factors and intelligent systems. There is a
description of the Centre with organization chart, staff e-mail list, annual review for 1996/97 and information on the visiting
experts program. The TDC Library is described and an extensive bibliography on intelligent transportation systems provided, although
access to the main library catalogue is restricted to Transport Canada sites. Publications lists for 1995 through 1998 include
summaries and ordering information. Full text of the "Publications guidelines for contractors" is provided. News releases are
available in the publications section as well as in a "news and events" listing. The "Directory of TDC projects" is organized by
mode and area of interest and contains a description of each project with contact info, schedule, funding and report title if
available. "R&D updates" give summaries of recent research on topics such as aircraft de-icing, truck driver fatigue and safer
logging trucks. There is a site map and the site can be searched through the main Transport Canada search engine.

Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB)
The Transportation Safety Board is an independent agency that investigates accidents in marine, air, pipeline and rail
transportation. This site contains the TSB mandate, list of Board members with biographies, location and contact information for
Board offices, text of the Canadian Transportation Accident Investigation and Safety Board Act and a selection of financial and
administrative reports. A document details the investigation process; a brief report outlines key safety issues from the past year;
there is an explanation of the Occurrence Classification Policy and a description of Securitas, a confidential program for reporting
transportation safety concerns. The TSB Marine, Pipeline, Rail and Air Investigation Reports are available in full from 1994 to
date, with selected reports from previous years. Occurrence Statistics for the four areas are also available monthly from 1999, with
some annual reports for earlier years. Occurrence Communiques are also provided. Employment inquiries are directed to the Public
Service Commission Web site. The site is searchable and includes a wide selection of links on transportation safety. An "Update
History" section records additions to the site for the past few months.

VIA Rail Canada
The Web site for Via Rail contains extensive information on schedules and fares, including discount and rail pass programs and
classes of service. "Resernet" allows online booking or planning through checking availability and fares. Route maps show major
destinations and Via Adventures describes attractions and scenery along these routes. Pictures of Canadian landscape and of the
outside and inside of the trains are available for viewing. Schedules and brochures are offered for on-line reading or download.
Links are provided to other Web sites, for destination cities, tourist sites, and other rail companies. While the majority of the
site is devoted to travel, there is a page of corporate information which contains biographies of management and the 1997 annual
report. The Press Releases section is currently empty. Policies and other services are described in "At Your Service", along with
contact information and addresses. A feedback page has a form for comment and brief summary of customer satisfaction statistics. The
site is not indexed, but each section is to other pages of relevant information.
