Athabasca


Town of Athabasca
A rural community, the Town of Athabasca is located in the Athabasca river valley, 145 km north of Edmonton. Municipal government information can be found in the Town Office and Municipal Services sections. Names and contact information for local government and emergency services and a notice board are found in the Town Office section. The Municipal Services link takes visitors to information on bylaws, permits, town facilities, protection services, and outside services. The majority of community information is located under the Community Services link. Use this link to find information on social support services, health services, educational institutions, libraries and other organizations and service clubs. There is a separate Community Economic Development section. A town album features photographs of the riverfront before and after redevelopment. Also included on the site is history and tourism information.

Banff
Visitors to the Banff Web site are greeted by a simple graphical page offering the following choices: About Banff, Town Hall, Programs and Services, Publications and Forms, Special Initiatives and Related Sites. All interior pages feature navigation across the top of the page and a site search box at the bottom. The navigation bar at the top includes pull-down choices, making the site easy to navigate. The choices available in the submenus are far too numerous to list here. This site is professionally produced and graphics-intensive - visitors with slow connections and older browsers beware. The Publications and Forms section contains PDF documents. While the site itself is only available in English, there are links to French, German and Japanese sites that also describe the Banff area.

Big Lakes


Municipal District of Big Lakes
This municipal district contains close to 4,500 people living to the north, south and west of Lesser Slave Lake. The district also includes the large oil field surrounding the Town of Swan Hills and a number of unincorporated hamlets. The Metis settlements in the area have their own councils and administer themselves. A regional map is available on the site. A comprehensive view of the district is available through the community "Profile" link. This profile includes information on demographics, economics, government, communication and transportation, and quality of life for the region. A variety of municipal information is also available on this site. The Council link provides a list of members of council, meeting dates, and committee appointments. General statistics and a history of the area, a summary of important dates and events since the origin of the district along with contact information is located under the M.D. Office link. The Planning and Development link consists of the district's land use bylaws and information of use to small businesses. The municipal budget and financial status is located under the Finance link, and a variety of community services are described under the Family and Community Services link. A quarterly newsletter is available on the site.

This basic Web site educates the visitor about the past and present of the Village of Big Valley. With a nod to its western heritage, the site provides links to History, Leisure, Citizen's Cafe, Visitor Information, Community Information, EMS, and outside links. Most areas contain more specific information. For instance, under the Our Community link the visitor will find additional links to Churches, Education, Community Groups and Health Services. Just about everything one might like to know about this small community can be found within the various sub-menus. There is no search engine or site map available. Aside from a Flash slideshow, all information is provided in HTML, requiring no additional browser plug-ins. At the time of this review, community events information was outdated.

The Municipal District of Bonnyville bills itself as one of the fastest growing rural municipalities in Alberta. The home page of the site is set up as a table, with information from each department entered in separate table cells. A good introduction to the area is available by clicking on the "General Information" link in the top right hand corner of the table. Municipal government information is divided into the following departments: "Council & Legislative Services"; "What's Happening in the MD"; "Community Services"; "Planning Services"; "Economic Development"; "Finance & Administration"; "Transportation & Utilities"; "Agricultural Services"; and "Protective Services". The "Planning Services" link contains useful municipal information including bylaws, 2000 taxes and financial statements, and the Reeve's Report. The "Contact Us" link takes visitors to a listing of councillors and municipal managers along with their phone numbers and email addresses. The site also provides links to regional and provincial affiliations, such as the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties.

Bow Island is located in the southeastern corner of Alberta, 200 miles south of Calgary. Brazeau


MD of Brazeau
A well designed site with dramatic colors. The site begins with a welcome from the Reeve that highlights the attractions of the MD. Information on the municipal districts' location with a brief cyber tour of towns and villages found within the MD is located under the Communities link. This cyber tour includes the town of Drayton Valley, the Village of Breton, and the six hamlets of Buck Creek, Cynthia, Lindale, Lodgepole, Rocky Rapids, and Violet Grove. The Resident Info link provides the most municipal information including Legislative Committees and Boards, Joint Municipal Boards, AD Hoc Committees, Administrative Departments and information on municipal services. A calendar showing council and committee meetings is available as is a link to the MD's newsletter. The Drayton Valley & District Chamber of Commerce home page is found under the Events link. Information on recreation, agriculture and business and industry is also available on the site.

his site has an excellent FAQ covering almost every aspect of Calgary's municipal government. The Municipal Handbook has statistical, historical, and other information on the municipal government. A map of Calgary, divided by wards, is available with links to a profile of each ward's Alderman. There are links to the home pages of Calgary City departments, boards and authorities, and the Calgary Police Service and Fire Department. The police have contact information, unsolved crimes, photo radar locations, news releases, job requirements, and crime statistics by community. The section on services includes online forms for reporting streetlighting problems and applying for permits. The site has a search engine and ample opportunity for input and feedback. The only things missing are the city bylaws and Council meeting minutes.

Calmar


Calmar
Part of the Capital Region, Calmar is located approximately 40 km from both the south and west side of the City of Edmonton. Calmar has a population of 2,000 and is one of the few remaining towns which has a provincial highway (Highway #39) as its Main Street. Municipal government information on this site consists mainly of contact names, telephone numbers and, in some cases, brief descriptions. Contact information for the Town Manager, Town Council, and School Board are found in the Government section. The Municipal Services section offers brief information on water, garbage, sewer, recycling, dog licenses, utilities, fire and police services. Information on community services such as family and community support services, health care, and schools are found in a Community Services section. Economic and business information can be found in the Development and Business Directory sections. The Development section features economic development, residential assessment, property tax and land inventory information. The business directory links visitors to the names, telephone numbers and addresses of businesses in a wide range of categories, such as banking, farm services, and new home builders. Recreation, culture, and leisure group information is also included on the site.

A well developed site that provides a wealth of information on the City of Camrose. Municipal information includes an annual report to the Citizens of Camrose, a directory of city phone numbers and e-mail addresses, and a list of city council members along with contact information. The site also includes information on leisure and protective services, churches and schools. Business links provide information on the cities' population, labour force, transportation and taxes. Added bonuses on the site are an index, search facility and an interactive map.

This official Web site of the Town of Canmore offers comprehensive information on the town and town council. An official town map, a photo tour, and links to local businesses are also available on the site.

This professionally designed site mostly provides a tourism-oriented view of the town of Cardston. Navigation is performed at either the top or bottom of each page, and there were no broken links to be found. Visitors to the site can learn about Tourism and Recreation opportunities, the Business Community, Community Profile, or peruse the Events Calendar. The business community section is currently under construction. Within the Tourism and Community Profile sections, visitors will find further drop down menus leading to more specific information (entertainment, religion, education, government). The site is easy to navigate and while it makes heavy use of images, requires no additional technology to view. There is no search engine or site map.

Most of the pages on this site have not been updated since spring 1998, and the latest town council minutes to be posted are dated February 23, 1998.

Simply arranged with navigation at the top and bottom of each page, visitors to the Web site can read about News & Events, Community Profile, Lifestyles, and the local Business Community. Within each section the pages are futher subdivided to highlight specific information, however all the information is presented on a single page, making some of them quite lengthy. The information contained on this site was up to date. This site makes sparse use of graphics, making it friendly to the low-bandwidth visitor. This site has a search engine.

While focusing less on historical information than some small Alberta municipal Web sites, the home page for the Village of Consort provides a good deal of current information. Visitors to the Web site can learn about upcoming events and recreational opportunities, and read town council minutes dating back to the beginning of 2001. The "Information" page is further subdivided into fifteen areas including Accomodations, Churches, Schools, Tourism, etc. The "Directory of Services" section is the largest single page on the site, providing an extensive guide to area "health services, schools, churches & community support services." The site has a site map but no search engine. There appear to be no non-HTML documents on this site, making it an easy browse.

The municipality of Crowsnest Pass was formed in 1979 by the amalgamation of five communities (Bellevue, Hillcrest, Frank, Blairmore and Coleman). The Crowsnest Web site offers a Community Profile, Recreation Guide, and tourism information. The Community Profile includes information on location, population, industries, transporation, municipal services, etc. The Recreation Guide is divided into winter activities, summer activities, services, and education information. The Tourism section gives information on historic sites and more information on summer and winter recreation. Drumheller
Drumheller is known as the Dinosaur Capital of Canada and is home to the Royal Tyrell Museum, one of the largest palaeontological museums in the world. The site gives a brief description of the history of the area and provides a community link that lists town services relating to education, health care, transportation, religion and businesses. The Business and Economy link provides further information on the local economy and government services. Interesting activities for children including a dinosaur colouring book and picture gallery, dinosaur facts and a geological time scale are available through the Kids Zone link. The best starting place for general information on the municipal district of East Peace is through the About East Peace link. This provides a good overview of the MD including information on business and government agencies, housing, taxes, transportation and communication, and the MDs' infrastructure. Government information is located under the Council link. This links to a council and staff directory, a brief overview of the roles and responsibilities of council and administration, and a list of council agendas along with the minutes of meetings. The Public Information link also provides useful government information such as key bylaws, the funding of municipal services, municipal district forms and frequently asked questions. This area of the home page will be more useful once all of the links are fully functional.

Visitors to the Empress Village Web site are greeted with a framed page, with navigation appearing in the left frame. Navigation choices include Services, Businesses, Business Ads, History, Native History, Location and Overview, Pictures, Coming Events, and Classified Ads. Each of these choices are self-explanatory and lead to no surprises. The navigation frame changes with each selection, sometimes leading to confusion as to the current location and easiest way back, though all pages to contain a link back to the home page. Information is basic but useful. There were no broken links on any of the pages. A few of the pages were incomplete as of the date of this review, and the current events section was several months old. There is no site map or search engine for this site.

The Town of Falher is one of the oldest agricultural communities in the Peace Country. It was given village status in 1929 and was incorporated as a town in 1955. The information behind each section is straightforward, though navigation from within each page is not quite uniform, with not all pages offering links back to the home page and other pages containing broken links. The community of Fort Saskatchewan has a population of 13,346 and is located just 30 minutes from downtown Edmonton. The city's Web site consists primarily of municipal government information, however, a community events calendar and links are also included.
