Base Mapping and Geomatic Services Branch (BMGS) Official Canadian government site
(BMGS) manages basic geographical information as a corporate service to BC government ministries and the public. BMGS sets standards for base mapping, manages BC's official coordinate reference system for satellite positioning, names geographical features in BC, and manages the provincial Aerial Photography Program. The BMGS Web site provides detailed information on the roles, responsibilities, and services of the branch. General information is found under the "BMGS News" and "About BMGS" links. "Current project" information has its own section. Profiles of the branch's "Air Photo Program" and "Geo-Spatial Reference Unit" are also found in their own sections. Information on ordering from BMGS' inventory of 2 million air photos, products from the Provincial Digital Atlas, and 7,027 published map products can be found in the "Customer Support" and "Product Price List" sections of the site.

BC Courses.com
BC Courses.com, which used to be "Distributed Learning Course Directory, 1999 edition", lists academic, career enhancement and vocational courses offered "at a distance" by BC post-secondary institutions including colleges and universities. 'Distance' and 'distributed' mean these courses do not typically rely on in-class instruction. It is possible to display course offerings by institution, by technology (delivery medium such as audio, video, or computer) and by subject area. The advanced search features searching by institution, course, delivery medium, start date, and campus. Under "Learner Services" find additional links for students such as the Post-secondary Application Service of BC (PASBC), Community Skills Centres of British Columbia, and B.C. Council on Admissions and Transfer (BCCAT). The site also provides a registry so that post-secondary institutions may update their pages continuously.

BC Ferries Official Canadian government site
By means of this searchable site, travellers can learn about the BC Ferry service including current sailing conditions, service notices, routes, schedules, fares, online reservations and travel planning. A wealth of information "About BC Ferries" includes fleet data, history complete with photo archives, and a log of BC Ferries News Releases and Media Advisories. Crown Corporation information such as annual reports, strategy papers and safety information is also featured. Kidzone has "Onboard n'Interactive" activities for children complete with Bridge Tour, Colouring Activities and a Match the Ferry Game. "Contact Us" gives important telephone numbers, links to the Online Reservation Service, and features a Web Feedback Form.

BC Government Directory Official Canadian government site
The BC Government Directory is a central database of provincial government organizational information, and directory information for Office of the Lieutenant-Governor, Legislative Assembly and Independent Offices, Judiciary, Executive Council, Office of the Premier and Cabinet Office, Ministries, Crown Corporations and Public Agencies and their employees. You can search the directory to find addresses, telephone numbers and individuals within organizations and organizational units in the government of British Columbia. Search using organization name, program name, surname, given name, phone number or title as the search criteria. There are links to the Index of BC Government Toll Free Phone Numbers and Other Directory Sites.

BC Government Publications Index Official Canadian government site
The BC Government Publications Index is an Internet searchable listing of available government publications. The Index includes a listing of Government Ministry Publications, pamphlets, as well as many forms. A number of publications are also included from participating government-funded organizations, such as Crown corporations. The index can be searched or browsed by ministry/organization. Information on how to order publications is provided with each listing.

BC Heritage Official Canadian government site
The Heritage Branch of the Ministry of Community, Aboriginal and Women's Services operates 13 unique historic sites. The branch's Web site offers detailed introductions to the facilities and services of all sites operated by the branch. These are: Barkerville historic town; Cottonwood House historic site; Craigflower Manor and Schoolhouse; Emily Carr House; Fort Steele heritage town; the Grist Mill and Gardens; Haig-Brown House Education Centre; Helmcken House; Hat Creek Ranch; Kilby Store & Farm; Point Ellice House; Point Ellice House; Historic Yale; XA:YTEM Longhouse Interpretative Centre. Visual tours and listings of things to do, foods and shops to visit, and events scheduled are included with the descriptions of each site. In some cases, there are also links to Web sites that have developed further information on a location. Information on the services of BC Heritage Trust, a crown corporation that supports and promotes heritage conversation initiatives, is also featured.

BC Human Rights Tribunal Official Canadian government site
This searchable site records the activities of the Human Rights Tribunal which is an independent, quasi-judicial provincial body that adjudicates and mediates human rights complaints under the British Columbia Human Rights Code. Contact information is provided plus a transcription of the Human Rights Code, R.S.B.C., 1996. Current rules of practice and procedure are included and for easy reference, there are links to specific sections of the Code and full text of the Tribunal decisions dating back to 1997. The Decisions Index makes it possible to search decisions made by the Tribunal from 1984 to present by date, grounds and section of the code. In tabular form these reports include the complainant, respondent, act code, grounds, decision date, outcome, tribunal member, and remedy. There are also links to other provincial human rights commissions and to the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

BC Hydro Official Canadian government site
A provincial Crown corporation reporting to the Minister of Employment and Investment, BC Hydro's full-feature site covers all aspects of its energy management business. The site is divided into four main sections: Make Me PowerSmart; Tell Me About BC Hydro; Preserve My Environment; and Show Me My Account. A site map is available from the home page. The site map, site search and contact information are available once any of the four sections are accessed. PowerSmart is a BC Hydro program for energy conservation and management through certification of consumer and business electrical appliances that meet its standards for energy savings. Extensive information can be found in About BC, including contact information, history, annual report, newsletter, news releases, electricity rates, employment opportunities, Aboriginal relations, and resolution of the Year 2000 problem. BC Hydro's environmental conservation program here includes reports back to 1996, information on special projects such as reduction of greenhouse emissions, the Damagotchi! game, how BC Hydro is balancing preservation of fish habitats and energy needs, and the use of areas owned by BC Hydro for recreation. Following registration with BC Hydro, customers can view their account information in tabular or graph form.

BC Learning Connection Official Canadian government site
BC Learning Connection, a division of Magic Lantern Communications, is contracted by the BC Ministry of Education to supply licensed video resources to the K-12 school system in British Columbia. The BCLC K-12 Video Library lists videos by K-12 Subject Area, K-12 IRP (videos recommended by the Ministry of Education) and for K-12 French. All the videos are purchased with public performance or classroom rights and may be purchased by any teacher or administrator in a public or private school, including band schools that fall under the jurisdiction of the BC Ministry of Education, any B.C. School Board, District Resource Centre, or any Teacher Training Department of a B.C. Post-Secondary Institution. An online order form is available together with links to video distributors and educational sites.

BC Liquor Stores Matters of Taste Official Canadian government site
The Liquor Distribution Branch (LDB) is B.C.'s largest retailer, employing thousands of British Columbians in over 220 government liquor stores across the province. Matters of Taste, the official Web site of the LDB, provides customers with extensive product information and introduces new products and store promotions. There is a search featuring allowing customers to find retail outlets within 5 km of a postal code or by city or area. Information on services and promotions in each store is also available. Information on alcohol awareness programs, special occasion licences, product serving suggestions, drink recipes and container deposit/refund services is also provided.

BC Online
In order to use BC Online, you must register as a customer with an ID and Password. It is a one-stop Internet gateway to Government Registry information in British Columbia providing quick and easy access to information on Land Titles, Property Assessments, BC Companies, registrations under the Personal Property Security Act (i.e. Liens and Security Agreements), and a range of other useful information services. Prices for retrieving the information vary by government database; however, a land title search for example would cost $6.00 plus a $1.50 service charge. Generally, searches of the government databases are available from 6:00am to 8:00pm (Pacific Time) Monday through Saturday, including Statutory Holidays.

BC Parks Official Canadian government site
The BC Parks site prominently features a searchable park finder and campsite information. An Info Centre section includes BC parks facts and figures, community involvement information, a trip planner, etc. Other sections provide information on the conservation, education and planning functions of the BC Parks public trust. BC Rail
BC Rail is s single line railway running 1300 miles north from Vancouver. Information on the railway's passenger services includes descriptions, itineraries and rates for excursions and vacation packages. Basic information on freight services is offered, but some of this section is restricted to registered customers. News releases, annual reports, job postings, historical, statistical and other corporate information are also featured. There is also information on the BC Rail Film Office, which was established to work with film production companies shooting on the BC Rail line.

BC Stats Official Canadian government site
BC Stats is the central statistical agency of the Province of British Columbia. This searchable Web site provides statistical information relating to all facets of life in British Columbia, including the demographic, social and economic conditions of the province and its population. Keyword and phrase searches yield annotated results as html, .pdf and/or Excel files. The Web page is subdivided into six sections. NEW RELEASES are reports; some are available only by subscription. QUICK FACTS provides ready reference facts about British Columbia under broad areas such as the Land and the People and then, more specifically, by topical areas such as High Technology, Small Business, and Asia Pacific Issues. Many are supported with statistical tables and articles. REGIONS includes information on Regional Districts (28); Municipalities (152); Local Health Areas (102); Provincial Electoral Districts (75); and Regional District Electoral Areas (164). SUBJECTS provides subject links to many BC Statistical reports and digests. INFOLINE is a weekly digest available both in HTML highlights or full text viewed through adobe acrobat reader. CENSUS draws upon Statistics Canada Data. BC Transit
BC Transit is the provincial Crown Corporation charged with providing public transportation throughout the Province, except for the Greater Vancouver region. The BC Transit site is easily navigated, offering visitors the option of clicking on a map or using pull down menus to find information on public transportation in a specific community. These links take visitors either to information produced by BC Transit or by individual communities. In most cases, schedules, route maps, contact information, etc. are featured. The site also offers general information about BC Transit, including corporate information, history, news, and employment and tender information. A link to the Greater Vancouver Transportation Authority (otherwise known as "TransLink") is also prominently featured.

Offers a keyword search of Web sites, archived listserv discussions and electronic publications. British Columbia Agricultural Workforce Policy Board
The British Columbia Agricultural Workforce Policy Board (AWPB) is a partnership of public and private sector groups and organizations in BC that have an interest in agriculture and its workforce. "Working in an advisory capacity, the Board is a vehicle for industry to raise workforce issues, and for industry and government to work together to address them." General information on the Board and agricultural work can be found in AWBP annual reports and minutes, newsletters, and reports such as an "Agricultural Workforce Profile," and "Report on Farm Labour Supply in the Fraser Valley." The site features "A Guide for Agricultural Employers" that addresses practical topics such as regulations for hiring farm workers and parental leave. Information for workers includes links to agricultural training opportunities and an agricultural employment page. The site also features a "Catalogue of Agricultural Awareness", which was developed as part of the Board's long-term strategy to enhance the image of agriculture and agricultural employment.

British Columbia Ambulance Service Official Canadian government site
The British Columbia Ambulance Service (BCAS) is Canada's only provincially operated ambulance service. Paramedics provide emergency pre-hospital treatment and transportation to the public and visitors throughout British Columbia, with ambulance stations located in 169 communities across the province. Service in rural areas is largely provided by part-time staff paramedics trained to the Emergency Medical Assistant (EMA) I level who respond to a page issued from the regional dispatch centre. The BCAS site gives a brief history and description of the service and some information about the management and operation of BCAS and a few operational statistics. The site also provides information on BCAS paramedic qualifications and training, contact information, and related links.

British Columbia Archives Official Canadian government site
This site features a central search gateway to all Web pages on the site or one can search by specific media indexes (textual records, maps, visual records and library catalogue). Full text searching of textual records and maps finding aids (box and file lists) is also available. The "Vital Events" indexes to marriage and death registrations must be searched separately. Digitized records include over 40,000 still images (photographs and artwork), and a small number of maps and film clips. The "Services and Inquiries" section features a clickable reference room map and a detailed research orientation guide. The BC Archives "Amazing Time Machine", a SchoolNet Digital Collections site, is also available from the home page. There are links to information management policies and procedures, ARCS On-line (Administrative Records Classification System), the Archives Association of BC, and the Information, Science and Technology Agency under which the BC Archives falls.

British Columbia Arts Council Official Canadian government site
The British Columbia Arts Council is an independent agency established by the provincial government to support BC's artistic and cultural community. The role of the Council includes managing funds for BC's arts and culture, including awarding grants, and supporting arts and culture through public education, research and advocacy. Background information on the Council, including links to annual reports, newsletters, and other Council publications, are readily available on the site. Information on programs eligible for funding in the following areas are also available: arts festivals; arts training resources; community arts development; dance; literary arts; media arts; museums; music; theatre; and visual arts. Application forms for Council awards can be downloaded, but the Arts Council must be contacted for a password and application guidelines before applications can be accessed.

British Columbia Building Corporation
The British Columbia Building Corporation (BCBC) is a Crown Corporation established in 1977 to provide accommodation and real estate services to the British Columbia provincial government. In 1997, provincial legislation was passed enabling BCBC to provide its services to the public sector. This site offers a great deal of information about the corporation including a service/strategic plan, annual reports, and organizational structure information. The "Doing Business With BCBC" section offers the following online business opportunities: register to download bid documents to provide goods and services to BCBC; access BCBC's filming contract to request venue access; register to download RFP documents for lease space; access secure online area for BC government ministry clients and BCBC staff; and access BCBC technical standards and manuals. The site also provides listings of jobs available at BCBC and a listing of surplus government properties for sale.

British Columbia Film Commission Official Canadian government site
A branch of the Ministry of Competition, Science and Technology, the British Columbia Film Commission was created in 1978 to market the province of British Columbia as a film production centre and a film location. The Commission's Web site offers quick facts for those seeking general information about the Commission or the motion picture industry and detailed information for those considering filming in British Columbia or pursuing a career in the industry. For those considering shooting in British Columbia, information on tax incentives, government regulations and permits, location and production services, equipment production supplies, studio and screen facilities, post production services, and labour rates are posted as .PDF files in the "Services" section. In the "Guides/Permits" section, detailed lists of shooting contacts, regional film commissions, labour-unions/guilds, professional organizations and government agencies can be found in PDF format. The "Film Info" section offers film industry facts and statistics, general information on film careers, and descriptions of training programs offered by public and private institutions. A detailed "film list" -- a listing of films currently or scheduled to be in production -- is posted in the "What's New" section. British Columbia Law Institute
Has institutional information about the LRC and its work, the full text of over 50 LRC Reports and consultation documents, and the "Law Reform Database", an index to over 5000 documents prepared by law reform bodies from around the world, and the "Limitation Act Case Finder" database of over 600 cases related the Limitation Act, both of which must be downloaded to be searched. There is also a section on the division of pensions on marriage breakdown.

British Columbia Lottery Corporation
The British Columbia Lottery Corporation conducts and manages all lottery schemes in British Columbia such as BC/49, Extra, Daily 3, Sports Action, Oddset, Point Spread, Toto, Over/Under, Scratch & Win, Keno, Keno Bonus, Pull Tab and Chaser. Its Web site announces the lottery winning numbers, gives instructions on how to claim a lottery prize, and lists previous winners. As well, there are links to bingo and casinos. The British Columbia Lottery Corporation operates all commercial bingo in British Columbia including electronic bingo and sets all operating standards for casinos in B.C. British Columbia Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries Official Canadian government site
This ministry is responsible for fostering a competitive, economically viable and environmentally responsible agriculture and food industry throughout British Columbia. Information on the Ministry, its programs and services, policy papers, facts and background information on the food industry, regional profiles, commodity profiles, lists of publications available for sale, information on legislation administered by the Ministry, and environmental guidelines for producers are featured on this site. The site map offers a good access point to the contents of the site. In January 2002 the BC government began a 3-year restructuring program and ministry Web sites are being updated to reflect changes. The responsibility for fisheries has been divided among three ministries -- Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries, Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection and Ministry of Sustainable Resource Management -- and information on fisheries is available on all three ministry Web sites. BC government sites will be monitored and abstracts updated as further changes are made.

British Columbia Ministry of Children and Family Development Official Canadian government site
This site offers a wealth of information about the Ministry for Children and Families providing emergency numbers, email links, information about the ombudsman, Helpline for Children, and a wide range of programs and services including Addiction Services, Child Protection, Child Care, and Aboriginal Relations. The ministry works "to promote and protect the healthy development of children, youth and their families" in British Columbia. A broad selection of publications on everything from choosing childcare to becoming a foster parent is accessible. The Site Map is a hot-linked visual representation of the entire Web site. As well, there is an alphabetical index, a keyword search engine, and a series of regional maps designed to help British Columbians find out about programs and services in their communities with email links to the respective Regional Executive Directors. Centre for Curriculum Transfer and Technology Official Canadian government site

Emergency Social Services (or ESS) consists of some 5000 volunteers organized by volunteer directors and supported by staff from the BC Ministry of Human Resources. This volunteer emergency response service is designed to preserve the well being of people affected by emergency or disaster in communities in British Columbia. Liquor Appeal Board Official Canadian government site
Separate and independent from the Liquor Control and Licensing Branch (LCLB), the Liquor Appeal Board hears appeals of LCLB licensing and enforcement decisions made under s.31 of the Liquor Control and Licensing Act and listing and delisting decisions made under s.16 of the Liquor Distribution Act. The appeal board's Web site is easily navigated. Information on the role of the appeal board, and its rules, practices and procedures can be found on the home and procedures pages. The Notice of Appeal page offers a suggested format for those wishing to file an appeal. The Decisions page offers links to full-text decisions, cross indexed by keywords and phrases. Liquor Control and Licensing Branch Official Canadian government site
The branch mandate of the Liquor Control and Licensing Branch (LCLB) is to control access to alcohol and encourage moderation. Specific responsibilities include: the issuance of licences for the resale (licensed establishments) and manufacture (breweries, wineries and distilleries) of liquor; regulating special occasion licences; taking enforcement action for contravention of the Liquor Control and Licensing Act; regulating liquor advertising and the Responsible Beverage Service program; and coordinating actions with municipalities, police and other regulatory agencies to diminish the impact of the sale of beverage alcohol on the justice, health, and social welfare systems. This Web site includes general information about the branch's mandate, responsibilities and organizational structure as well as more detailed information about its services. Also included is information on recent government reviews of legislation and licensing processes, copies of the Liquor Policy Review Newsletter, lists of infractions, etc. The Liquor Control and Licensing Branch (LCLB) is separate from the Liquor Distribution Branch (LDB), which operates government liquor stores and is responsible for the distribution, wholesaling, and retailing of liquor.

Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia Official Canadian government site
This office monitors the application of the province's Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPPA). The commissioner plays in a dual role in ensuring government lives up to its obligations under FOIPPA regarding the release of government information and that the interests of private citizens and the corporate sector are protected by not releasing information that would harm those interests. A copy of FOIPPA can be viewed here, along with orders and other decisions of the commissioner. The latter includes a tabular concordance with the orders keyed to relevant sections of the Act. Investigations and visits by the commissioner's staff to monitor privacy practices of public bodies under its mandate are contained in another section. Information about the office and publications, including news releases, annual reports, submissions to other public bodies, and a brochure about privacy rights, are also available. Other features are a search engine, a monthly hot link to an external document or site, and links to related sites in other jurisdictions and the private sector. Office of the Merit Commissioner Official Canadian government site
The Merit Commissioner is responsible for reporting annually to the Legislative Assembly on the application of the merit principle in British Columbia public service appointments. The Merit Commissioner conducts random audits of public service appointments, undertakes "merit performance reviews", and issues surveys to assess the attitude of public service employees towards the application of merit. The Merit Commissioner is not responsible for investigating or hearing complaints respecting individual competitions. Open Learning Agency (OLA)
Dating back to 1978, the Open Learning Agency has emerged responsible for the delivery of life-long learning opportunities in British Columbia. The Open Learning Agency Board of Directors are nominated by the provincial Minister of Advanced Education, Training and Technology, and appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council. This online overview of the Open Learning Agency includes those programs and services delivered through the Open School (K-12 curriculum), Open College (post-secondary and certificate and diploma programs), British Columbia Open University, Workplace Training Systems (consultants who work with private and public sector organizations to enhance workplace performance), Knowledge Network (the public educational television service in B.C.), the Canadian Learning Bank, and the International Credential Evaluation Service (educational evaluation services for individuals who have completed studies outside of Canada). Premier's Office (British Columbia) Official Canadian government site
This is the home page for information on the British Columbia Premier and his office. A biography of the Premier and links to popular topics, reports and publications, contacts, and related links are found on the home page. Documents found in the popular topics links include service plans, review documents, radio messages, speeches, and selected official correspondence from the Premier. Recordings of radio messages from February 2002 to present are saved as MP3 files and can be listened to using a media player. The full-text of speeches from June 2001 to present are saved in PDF format. Also found in the popular topics links are summary documents from "dialogues" held this year -- the First Citizen's Forum; Dialogue on Education; Provincial Congress; and Dialogue on Health. This is the site of the independent quasi-judicial tribunal responsible for ensuring that the principle of merit is upheld in the competition process within the British Columbia Public Service. General information on the Commission, hearing procedures, and how to file an appeal can be found on this site. Royal BC Museum Official Canadian government site
The Royal British Columbia Museum (RBCM) Web site offers information for those interested in visiting the museum or learning more about the cultural and natural heritage of British Columbia. A "Visit" section includes information on location, hours, rates, permanent galleries, and staff and department directories. A "Programs" section includes a page with descriptions of the museum's on-site school programs, self-conducted tours/activity sheets, and teacher previews. This learning resources page also offers links to online-programs on natural history topics, homework helpers, and kid's pages. The homework helpers are a series of Museum Notes written by subject experts on topics such as bats, early photographers of aboriginal peoples, and sternwheelers of BC. The notes are suitable for both adults and children. The kid's pages are full pages devoted to a single topic that draws on the RBCM's research and public programming expertise. Topics currently featured include octopus, pioneer kitchens, and the circus. A "Research" section includes a searchable online object database that allows visitors to find information on the museum's extensive collection of artifacts, specimens and images. Science Council of British Columbia Official Canadian government site
Established in 1978, this Crown agency administers various financial and awards programs to aid science education and applied research, and advises the government on science and technology issues. A well-organized site, finding tools include a search engine, site map, and a what's new page. The Council also has its own e-mail list. Application forms for funded programs can be downloaded in Rich Text Format (.rtf) while guidelines for completing the applications can be viewed online or downloaded. Online publications include the "Synapse" newsletter back to 1996 (Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view these); annual reports (Adobe Acrobat Reader and HTML versions); various reports and papers; news releases; and an inventory of video programs sponsored by the Council.
