Agenda:
- Brief discussion of the future of CIDL
- Procedures for the election of new Steering Committee
- Status of CIDL proposal to Canadian Heritage
- Brief update of current status of CIDL (staffing, membership, renewals, etc.)
Notes:
1. Future of CIDL
The Steering Committee agreed that CIDL has a future and that there is a need for a national body to coordinate digital initiatives. However, the role of CIDL in the current environment should be clarified. The evaluation of CIDL's mandate and future goals will be a priority for the newly elected Steering Committee.
Other issues discussed at the Teleconference were "born-digital" versus digitization; the next funding proposal to Canadian Heritage, and the role of the National Library.
2. Procedures for the election of the new Steering Committee
The CIDL Steering Committee is comprised of six elected members and the National Librarian. Exceptionally, the Steering Committee decided to hold elections now for all 6 elected positions. The current members of the Steering Committee will all be eligible for re-election. Institutions may self-nominate or they may nominate another institution. The criterion for nomination is that the institution is a full member of CIDL. Only full members may nominate and only full members may vote.
3. Status of CIDL Proposal to Canadian Heritage
It is expected that CIDL will have a response from Canadian Heritage in early October. All applicants that did not receive money through the Partnership Fund have been notified already. The deadline for the next round of funding is January 1, 2002.
4. Current Status
- a. Membership renewals
The membership renewal campaign has been quite successful. To date, over 50 members have either renewed or expressed an interest in renewing their membership fees, including 28 full members and 23 associate members.
- b. Funding
Ralph Manning stated that the CIDL is financially stable. It has over $50,000 in its account.
- c. Staffing
CIDL plans to hire Jennifer Trower to work three days/week for CIDL. Jennifer has worked for CIDL and the National Library's Digital Library Task Force.
