Sir William Van
Horne, ca. 1900-1910, by William Cooper (1843-1907)
We move across the
space we occupy because many individuals helped to build the paths by which we move. One
of the most significant of these paths has been the Canadian Pacific Railway whose
construction resulted from the leadership of William Van Horne (1843-1915).
Mirroring the words
of the biographer who wrote that "in a business interview he faced his caller,
straddling his chair, leaning his arms upon the back, and alternately puffing smoke and
flicking the ash from his cigar upon the carpet," William Coopers portrait
vividly expresses Van Hornes characteristic drive and determination.
