Cardinal
Paul-Émile Léger holding a child at the Centre for Handicapped Children, Yaoundé,
Cameroon, ca. 1971-1975, by Ken Bell
Paul-Émile Léger
(1904-1991) joined the priesthood of the Roman Catholic Church in 1929. In 1967, after
nearly 14 years as a Cardinal, he gave up the trappings of his office to begin a new
humanitarian mission among the lepers and handicapped children of Africa.
Such humanitarian
efforts have drawn the attention of Canadians to better understand the world, especially
in terms of Canadas wealth and the need to aid those who are less fortunate.
