Lotta Hitschmanova, Unitarian Service Committee of Canada, visiting USC schools in India, March-April 1966; photographed outdoors with a group of school girls, by John Buss

For almost 40 years beginning in 1945, Lotta Hitschmanova (1909-1991) was the executive director of Canada’s oldest overseas relief and development agency, the Unitarian Service Committee of Canada (USC Canada). Well-known throughout Canada, she inspired financial campaigns which enabled USC Canada to undertake development programs in countries throughout Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

John Buss’ portrait reveals the personal touch which Dr. Hitschmanova brought to USC Canada’s programs during her regular fact-finding visits to countries such as India.
