Elsie MacGill (1905-1980) was the first woman to receive an electrical engineering degree in Canada (1927), the first woman in North America to hold a degree in aeronautical engineering (1929) and the first woman aircraft designer in the world. During the Second World War, she directed the Canadian production of the Hawker Hurricane fighter for the United Kingdom. Her staff of 4,500 produced more than 2,000 aircraft during the war. Very active in women's organizations, MacGill once said: "I have received many engineering awards, but I hope I will also be remembered as an advocate for the rights of women and children."
