Florence Bird, 1984, by Harry Palmer

The Honourable Florence Bird (1908-1998), whose professional name was Anne Francis, was a broadcaster, journalist, author and senator. Born in Philadelphia, she moved to Canada in 1931 and began her media career. From 1942 to 1966, she was a news commentator and producer of documentaries for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

In 1967, Bird was appointed Chair of the Royal Commission on the Status of Women in Canada, the role for which she is best remembered and which, she said, shortly before her death, was just what she wanted.

Recipient of many awards, Florence Bird was made a Companion of the Order of Canada in 1971 and appointed to the Senate in 1978.
