Portrait of Leetia Onalik, Iqaluit, Nunavut, 1995, by Karim Rholem

Leetia Onalik (1915-1997) spoke of her life:

"During my youth, men and women had to work very hard to gain a living. We greatly appreciated life, especially when game was abundant. Animals were our main source of survival; they still are today."

Social and documentary photographer Karim Rholem was born in Morocco and has lived and worked in Montréal since 1985. From 1994 to 1995, he lived among the Inuit in the Eastern Arctic. He writes:

"The Inuit I met were not at all impressed by my abilities as a photographer. Among them, the personal relationship is much more important than professional success."

The National Archives holds 33 of Rholem's photographs from his series, Uvagut — Portrait of a People.
