Drawn by Captain George Vancouver, this is the fifth map of an atlas that accompanies his book, Voyage of Discovery to the North Pacific Ocean, published in 1798. He gathered the data during his expedition to the Pacific Northwest from 1792 to 1794. Captain Vancouver's mission was twofold: first, to undertake a thorough hydrographic survey of the North Pacific and, second, to pinpoint the location and condition of European settlements north of the Juan de Fuca Strait.
