Bird's eye view of Montréal, by George Bishop & Ptg Co. Ltd, 1889

This 1889 view of Montréal is an example of many produced in the second half of the nineteenth century, when industrialization and urban growth were highly valued. At that time, bird's-eye views were used to promote cities as good places to live and work.

There was a time when smoke rising from factories' chimney stacks meant prosperity rather than pollution.
