Dance at the Château Saint-Louis, Québec, 1801, by George Heriot

This watercolour portrays a round dance at the Château Saint-Louis, the Governor's residence, in Québec City. Here, evening get-togethers took place once or twice a week during the winter. George Heriot (ca. 1759-1839), Assistant Postmaster General for North America, created many works which are an eloquent record of a way of life and scenes long since past.

The National Archives owns 73 of Heriot's watercolours and wash drawings, including a sketchbook and numerous aquatints and prints.
