Joseph Bouchette, Surveyor General for Lower Canada from 1803 to 1840, wrote the first summary of Lower Canada's (Quebec) geography. He produced two fine maps of the province, one in 1815 and the second in 1831. He was described as "one of the most handsome men of his time." This miniature was painted by John Cox Dillman Engleheart (1782/1784-1862) and engraved on the title page of Bouchette's two books on Canadian geography. Watercolour on ivory (facsimile) C-112050 |
